What is a Cone Beam CT scan?

Cone Beam CT (CBCT) is a type of x-ray that creates detailed 3D images of teeth, bones, and soft tissues. It’s mainly used in dental, maxillofacial and some musculoskeletal imaging. It produces high-resolution images with lower radiation than traditional CT scans.

Understanding Your Cone Beam CT Examination

Before your Cone Beam CT:

  • No special preparation is required before a Cone Beam CT.
  • Please remove any jewellery from the region to be scanned, before coming to your appointment.
  • If you have a plaster cast on, that is no problem as we are able to scan through this.
  • You may need to lie down flat for your scan so please advise our booking team if you are not able to do this.

On the day of your Cone Beam CT:

  • Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing.
  • Avoid wearing any metal objects such as jewellery, eyeglasses, dentures, or hairpins, as these can interfere with the imaging process.
  • When you arrive, please check in with reception. We’ll make sure your details are correct and ask you to complete the appropriate forms.
  • Please inform your Medical Imaging Technologist if you are pregnant or suspect you might be pregnant, as special precautions may need to be taken.
  • Your Medical Imaging Technologist will explain the procedure to you and answer any questions you may have. They will position you correctly and ensure you are comfortable. You will need to remain very still during the scan to ensure clear images.
  • The scan itself is painless and usually takes only a few minutes.

During your Cone Beam CT:

  • The process is quick and painless, but you need to stay still and may be asked to hold your breath briefly.
  • The scan usually takes only a few minutes.
  • You may be instructed not to swallow.

After your Cone Beam CT:

You can resume your normal activities unless your doctor advises otherwise. Images are interpreted by our radiologists and sent to your doctor. Your doctor will discuss the findings and next steps with you.

Frequently asked questions

CT scans use low-dose x-rays, and are very safe. If you are pregnant or have kidney problems, please let us know before your appointment.

If your child is having a CBCT scan for dental or orthodontic reasons, these are performed sitting upright. They need to stay completely still and not swallow for at least 25 seconds, so it is important to practice this with them at home. During the procedure a guardian is welcome to stay in the room with the child and wear a lead apron for protection.

Pacific Radiology offers CBCT scans in four locations.
