Pacific Radiology fuels Olympic rowers

Olympic Rowers
Published on 24 February 2021

We are thrilled to announce a new partnership with New Zealand’s Olympic rowers in the Waikato, using world-leading technology to deliver biometric assessments for these elite athletes.

Pacific Radiology Waikato specialises in sports injury imaging and diagnosis and the team is providing cutting-edge bone density scans, known as DEXA scans, to measure body fat percentage, lean mass and fat mass in high performance rowers. Anna Ainsworth, Regional Manager for Pacific Radiology Waikato and one of the attending technologists, is proud of the exciting collaboration with Rowing New Zealand:

"We are proud to work alongside New Zealand's elite rowing athletes providing support that enables these rowers to not only achieve their best, to reach their goals and potential, but also to ensure their health and wellbeing on that journey."

DEXA scanning provides many benefits to help elite athletes such as rowers with training and preparation for competition on the world stage. Rowing New Zealand is now using the data from the scans to make changes to nutrition and prevent stress fractures from training and competition. They are also able to measure and monitor progress towards achieving performance or health-related goals over time.

Christel Dunshea-Mooij, New Zealand Registered Nutritionist and Lead Nutritionist for Rowing New Zealand, says the partnership with Pacific Radiology is invaluable: “Rowing is a high-intensity, power, endurance sport and it’s also highly competitive. Making sure that the athletes are fuelling appropriately for the work they are doing has resulted in improved mood, less illness, decreased injury rates and - most critically - increased responsiveness to training and subsequent performance”.

DEXA scans determine body composition by passing low-radiation xray beams through body tissue and are considered the ‘gold standard’ method for the measurement of bone density and the diagnoses of bone conditions in clinical and sport settings.

"World class athletes require a world class team to support them. Pacific Radiology is proud to be an integral part of that team, delivering our own cutting-edge services to support New Zealand’s athletes in their pursuit of greatness."
